Information we collect

We collect account identifiers and verified email information; your submitted date of birth, stored privately for adult eligibility and age calculation; reader-profile details including username, status, current book, one profile photo, book images, reading preferences, and previously provided profile content; approximate location and optional precise coordinates; Circle, Circle-chat, Circle-member direct-message, and Meetup activity you create; safety reports; device, log, security, and usage information; optional push tokens; support communications; and subscription and boost purchase and entitlement information processed through RevenueCat and the applicable app store. The adult eligibility check relies on the birth date you provide; it is not independent identity or age verification.

How we use information

We use information to operate and secure accounts, enforce adult eligibility, provide Circles, Meetups, reader profiles, Circle chats, and Circle-member direct messages, deliver opted-in notifications, verify subscription access, prevent fraud and abuse, investigate reports, enforce policies, comply with law, and improve reliability.

Profile-photo safety screening

Before publication, the single profile photo and any book images are automatically screened through an AI service provider for clear nudity or sexual content. Images that cannot be approved, including when screening is unavailable or inconclusive, are not published and may be appealed through support. We retain limited decision records—object path, purpose, outcome, reason codes, and model and prompt versions—but not image bytes or the provider’s full output.

Location, notifications, and account security

Location is optional; you may enter your city manually. Precise coordinates are used server-side for distance calculations and are not shown to other members. Push notifications are optional and device tokens are removed when disabled. We use account authentication, verified email, and two-step security measures to protect accounts. Before publication, the single profile photo is automatically screened for ordinary image safety concerns; images that cannot be approved are not published and may be appealed through support.

Sharing

Your public reader-profile showcase, including your primary profile photo, status, current book, and reading details, can be viewed by eligible members of a Circle you share. If you host an active Meetup, eligible signed-in readers can also view your host identity and public reader profile without sharing a Circle with you. Account-status and blocking restrictions still apply. Your raw date of birth and precise coordinates are not included in public profiles. Circle chats are visible to eligible Circle members and Circle-member direct messages are visible only to participants. We share data with service providers for account authentication, hosting, storage, database, email, AI safety screening, subscriptions, security, and reliability. We may also disclose information for a corporate transaction or when reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect safety, or enforce rights. We do not sell personal information for money.

Retention and deletion

We retain information while your account is active and as needed for the purposes above. Pausing hides the account but keeps its data. An in-app deletion request hides the account immediately, allows cancellation of deletion for 30 days without removing applicable account restrictions, and then begins permanent deletion from identity, application database, and owned storage. Limited contact and delivery records may be retained as needed to send deletion-completion confirmation, along with limited legal, fraud-prevention, safety, and dispute records.

Your choices and rights

You can edit profile information, including status, current book, and photos; manage Circle participation, direct-message and device permissions; block or report readers; pause or delete your account; and request access, correction, deletion, portability, restriction, objection, or an appeal where applicable. We may verify identity before completing a request.

Security and international processing

We use access controls, authenticated private storage, encryption in transit, least-privilege practices, and monitoring. No system is perfectly secure. Providers may process data in other countries using recognized safeguards where required.

Adults only, changes, and contact

Bookhour is strictly for adults 18 and older and is not directed to children. We will post material changes and may request renewed acceptance. Send privacy questions, rights requests, or moderation appeals to bookhoursupport@bookhour.app.
